What's the Lifespan of a Drive Shaft?

Drive shaft longevity varies depending on maintenance and the amount of wear and tear you put on it. 

You may only need a drive shaft replaced once or twice during the life of a vehicle used for normal driving purposes. You may need it replaced more often if you take it off-road or drive in areas with a higher risk for damage.

3 Signs of a Bad Drive Shaft

There are several signs that you have a drive shaft problem, including:

• Vibrations: Whole car and floorboard vibrations are signs of a damaged drive shaft. You may notice that the vibrations become more intense the faster you drive. One indication that the problem is with the drive shaft is if the vibrations are also present when your vehicle is running but parked or stopped at a light. 
• Sounds: If you hear a clunk when driving or squeaking and rattling, it could be the drive shaft or U-joints. Listen in particular whenever you accelerate or shift gears. If you hear a clunking noise at these times, it's a good indication that the drive shaft is the cause.
• Resistance when Turning: The drive shaft transfers torque to the differential, which allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds when you take a corner. That's important since wheels on the outside of the turn have more ground to cover than wheels on the inside on the turn. If you have a drive shaft problem, you may feel resistance whenever you turn into a parking space or take a corner.
